Duplicate Content
Duplicate content occurs when identical or very similar content is indexable under multiple URLs. This makes it harder for search engines to assign clear ranking signals and correctly include relevant pages in Indexing . For businesses, this means: less visibility despite existing content.
Why is duplicate content problematic?
When multiple URLs serve the same content, ranking signals like backlinks, internal linking, or user signals are distributed. This can weaken the visibility of individual pages and unnecessarily burden the available Crawl Budget .
Typical causes
Duplicate content frequently arises from parameter URLs, missing or inconsistent Redirect rules, unset canonical tags, or parallel http/https versions. Faulty Sitemap entries can also cause multiple variants to be indexed.
Technical solutions
Clean URL structures, consistent redirects, and clear Internal Linking are essential. A structured SEO architecture – for example through topical clusters or an SEO Hub – helps prioritize content unambiguously.
How we use it
During our Angular SSG relaunch, we faced the classic problem: trailing slashes created two indexable variants of every URL. Our solution was a strict .htaccess rule with DirectorySlash Off and consistent canonicals on every prerendered page. Additionally, the automated Sitemap includes only cleaned URLs – so no duplicates end up in the index.
