Server Location

Server location (Serverstandort) indicates in which country or region data is stored and processed. It affects both legal frameworks such as GDPR compliance requirements and technical factors like latency and performance. For German businesses, an EU server location is often a fundamental prerequisite.

Why is server location relevant?

When processing Personal data , the location determines which data protection regulations apply. Within the EU, GDPR requirements apply, while third countries require additional legal assessments.

Technical implications

The physical distance between server and user affects latency and thus indirectly performance metrics. An optimized infrastructure and strategic Caching can compensate for these effects.

Hosting and contractual considerations

When selecting a hosting provider, it should be verified where data centers are operated and what Data processing agreement regulations apply. The integration of Third-party providers services can also cause additional data transfers.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

Often it is not verified where hosting providers operate their infrastructure. CDN structures or external APIs can also transfer data to other legal jurisdictions without adequate documentation.

Practical perspective

We host all client projects at All-Inkl with data centers exclusively in Germany. This eliminates complex third-country assessments for the hosting itself. Our CI/CD runner also operates on our own infrastructure -- no cloud builds with US providers. For Shared hosting projects, we verify the provider's Data processing agreement contracts in advance. When needed, we use Containerization with Docker to operate projects on dedicated EU servers in isolation.
